In celebration of Singapore’s 60th Birthday, FHA is proud to highlight the nation’s vibrant multicultural food and beverage landscape and its continuous innovation. We sat down with Kenneth Chia, Managing Director of The Seafood Company and President of the Seafood Industries Association Singapore (SIAS). His dedication to elevating industry standards and promoting sustainable practices has made him a key figure in shaping the future of Singapore’s seafood sector.
In this FHA Insider interview, Chia discusses what it means to be a homegrown brand in a dynamic F&B scene, the value of the partnership between SIAS and FHA 2026, and the emerging trends that are set to transform the industry in the coming years.
Q: Could you introduce yourself and tell us more about your company and the Seafood Industries Association Singapore (SIAS)?
Hello everyone, I’m Kenneth Chia from The Seafood Company. I’m the Managing Director here, and also the President for the Seafood Industries Association Singapore. The Seafood Company, based in Singapore, is a seafood importer, distributor, and processor. We also do farming and exports.
The Seafood Industries Association Singapore is an association for all our seafood operators to have a collective voice, to work with the government, and to work regionally with our partners. We focus on three things: to grow domestically by getting Singaporeans to eat more seafood, to grow internationally by helping our producers export, and finally, to improve in terms of technology and know-how, while promoting sustainability for our companies in Singapore.
Q: As Singapore approaches its 60th birthday, what does it mean to you, as a Singaporean homegrown brand and being part of SIAS, to contribute to Singapore’s dynamic F&B scene?
As a Singaporean homegrown seafood brand and being part of SIAS, companies like ours are very proud to be part of SG60. Singapore has one of the most diverse culinary scenes the world has to offer. As a seafood distributor, we get to learn and experience cuisines from around the world. We need to be good enough to supply to all these different cuisines. It has been dynamic, fun, challenging, and yet rewarding at the same time.
Q: SIAS is committed to a stronger involvement in FHA 2026. From your perspective, what makes this partnership with FHA so valuable for the seafood industry and for the SIAS’s members?
FHA has been a proven brand in Singapore for nearly 50 years. SIAS is very happy and honored to be working with FHA this year so that our members can come together and offer something more to our visitors. To us, FHA is not just an avenue for local buyers; we also see a strong crowd from international buyers, especially companies from our regional scene.
Q: From your perspective, what emerging trends are you most enthusiastic about, and how do you see them transforming the industry in the coming years?
The seafood industry is always evolving. I’ve been in this business for over 20 years, and nothing has ever stayed the same. When it comes to emerging trends in Singapore, I’m looking at two things.
First, sustainability. Our government is taking the lead, and many of our companies are now very involved in sustainable practices, from production to importation and sales.
Second is technology, particularly with marinated seafood. For example, we have companies investing in skin pack technology while staying true to our Asian roots with Asian-sourced seafood. This allows many of us to now export to the rest of the world.
Kenneth Chia’s passion for a sustainable and impactful F&B industry is clear. His insights underscore the critical role FHA plays in connecting local players with the global market and driving innovation within Singapore’s vibrant food scene. His vision for a dynamic and responsible industry culminates in his powerful statement: “Being a part of Singapore’s F&B industry means that we’re providing seafood that’s good for people, good for the future, and good for the world.”
