Largest edition of Food&HotelAsia wraps up with new milestones

The Ruby Jubilee edition of Food&HotelAsia (FHA) – Asia’s leading and most comprehensive international food and hospitality trade event – closed on 27 April 2018, marking a resounding 40 years of excellence in enabling business transformation. The roaring success of FHA2018, which concluded with many firsts, is not without the strong support of the industry.

5 Key Event Highlights

Truly 2 Venues, 1 Mega Show: 2018 brings about the largest FHA yet, occupying a whopping 119,500 sqm of exhibition area across 2 venues, Singapore Expo and Suntec Singapore.
The event welcomed 81,896 attendees from 120 countries/regions, an increase of 11.5% from 2016. Trade attendees include exhibiting staff, trade visitors, conference speakers and delegates, judges and competitors, and members of the media.
Throughout the 4 days of event, trade buyers packed the exhibition halls in search of products and solutions amidst the tens of thousands of product offerings put up by a record 3,466 exhibitors from 76 countries/regions and 72 international group pavilions. Read more
Adding to the excitement onsite, a string of world-class competitions, workshops and activities were staged alongside the exhibition, providing a holistic show experience to all attendees. The inaugural editions of these competitions and events (namely Asian Gelato Cup, C3 (Chocolate Chef Competition), The Global Star Chefs Pastry Show, SCI Equipment Awards) were held at FHA2018. 350 conference delegates and speakers from 23 countries were highly engaged in gaining and sharing industry knowledge at the 3-day FHA2018 International Conference. 55,433 visitors thronged the halls in both exhibition venues in search for new products, new suppliers, new ideas, and to meet up with friends and associates within the industry. Overseas visitors made up a significant 40%. Asia’s most prestigious international culinary competition supported by Worldchefs (World Association of Chefs’ Societies), FHA Culinary Challenge (FCC) attracted competitors from Asia and beyond. As one of FHA’s most exhilarating events, winners for the various challenges were crowned over 4 days of intense cook-offs.

The first-ever Asian Gelato Cup held at FHA was jointly organised by UBM and Singapore Pastry Alliance. Judged by a panel of experts, 12 teams of gelato/pastry chefs from around Asia worked hard for the inaugural title of the Asian Gelato Cup. This prestigious competition also acts as a pre-selection platform for World Gelato Cup 2020 in Rimini, Italy.

A competition of creativity and the art of plated dessert, 6 talented pastry chefs prepared a chocolate plated dessert and moulded chocolate bonbons in a short 5 hours 30 minutes at the C3. Yusuke Aoki from Four Seasons Resort Bali, Indonesia was revealed as the winner.

The 3-hour Global Star Chefs Pastry Show became the biggest industry show performed by Star Chefs: World Champions and Meilleur Ouvriers de France! These pastry legends demonstrated their talents by preparing one speciality each and created a magnificent buffet for pastry enthusiasts and learners.

Producing excellent espresso-based drinks requires hours and hours of practice. Barista Super Duo Challenge gathered 13 teams of top baristas and tested their technical skills and showmanship. After 2 days of intense competition, critics from the panel of distinguished judges decided on the following winning list:

The demonstration of latte art making techniques by 35 regional experts attracted many keen eyes at the Latte Art Showdown. Amidst tough competition, Alistair Seetho from One Man Coffee, Singapore emerged as the champion.

Digital Marketing Workshop

As the customer journey evolves with the infiltration of mobile devices, companies need to stay abreast of the trends and develop digital marketing strategies that enable them to compete effectively. Experts at the Digital Marketing Workshop brought together by FleishmanHillard shared on how to increase branding and leads, managing crisis and social listening.

Halal Workshop by DagangHalal

Professionals from restaurants, cafés, hotels and catering institutes alike gained valuable insights from topic expert Marina Muhamad, Head of Training & Consulting at DagangHalal, through her invaluable sharing on Halal Certification and foodservice.

Robotics/ Automation Workshop

Technological advancements in various domains have broadened the application horizon of robotics to an incredible extent. The sessions by Gavin Pathross discussed about how advancements impacted the future of consumption, food preparation and brand loyalty. Gavin was the CDO for Yum! Brands, before he became CEO of a F&B robotics startup, ROSS Digital.

Experts and professionals from the Foodservice Consultants Society International (FSCI) provided trade visitors one-to-one consultation at Suntec Singapore. Consultancy services included remodelling or building of kitchen and more.

FHA2018 International Conference concluded with a 3-day programme packed with power networking sessions, comprehensive thought-leadership sharing with experts, peers and industry insights. This biennial conference hosted 4 concurrent conference tracks packed with interactive panel discussions, joint presentations, user case studies, pre-conference masterclasses, site visits and networking sessions. Key and new topics include millennials and the future of hospitality, China food & hospitality market, F&B innovations, ready meals and vending machines, plant-based meat, 3D printing food, automation and robotics as well as augmented reality and artificial intelligence.
